Halitosis is characterized by bad breath, gingivitis, dry mouth, sinus infection or postnasal drip. It is  caused by sulfide compounds that form in the mouth as bacteria proliferate and oral mucosa or tissue breakdown and are replaced with new tissue.  When the tissues are inflamed or infected, higher levels of bacteria increase the rate of tissue regeneration and bad breath develops.
