Urticaria is characterized by itching, red spots on upper trunk, red patches on skin, hives and swelling. It is a skin condition commonly known as hives.  It may appear on the surface of the skin or below the surface. Urticaria can be caused by an allergic reaction to insect bites and stings, injections, or reactions to foods like eggs, shellfish, nuts or fruits such as strawberries.  It may also accompany viral infections, including hepatitis, infectious mononucleosis and rubella.
