Schistosomiasis is characterized by fever, appetite loss, weight loss, abdominal pain and discomfort, general weakness, headache, joint pain, diarrhea, nausea and persistent cough. It is an infection caused by a parasite in snails that inhabit lakes and rivers in rural areas where sanitation is poor.  The larvae of the parasite penetrate the skin to infest persons wading or swimming in areas where the snails are present.
