Hypertension is characterized by irritability, headache, general weakness, dizziness, flushed face, hemorrhages, retinal vessel changes, lightheadedness and blurred vision. It is an elevation in blood pressure.  It often runs in families and may be related to genetic factors.  This is called essential hypertension.  Another type, secondary hypertension may be the result of another disorder such as kidney disease or heart disease.
