Symptoms of Autoimmune Diseases

Symptoms of autoimmune diseases are usually due to an overactive response to substances and stimuli that do not affect the body under normal conditions. The body's response may be exaggerated in susceptible people, causing an attack on the body's own tissues. The attack can focus on one or more organs such as the lung, kidney, liver, heart, or thyroid or, in some instances, on the central nervous system. Variances in the levels of several hormones naturally produced in the body also may trigger these attacks.
